Former President Obama on Wednesday made a surprise visit to play ball with students participating in the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy’s after-school program.

The former president took a turn at bat, and also played football with the children, according to a video of his visit.

“Work hard in school, listen to your coaches. You guys are going to do great things,” he told the kids.

Local outlet DCist reported that the kids were “completely unaware” that the former president might stop by, and were delighted by the unexpected visitor.

The academy also tweeted about the visit on Thursday, writing: “Yesterday, President @BarackObama visited #NatsAcademy to play games with our students & shop the farmer’s market.”

“The Academy uses baseball & after-school enrichment to foster character development, academic achievement, and improved health among underserved youth in D.C.,” it added.

The program takes place on the city’s southeast side and provides coaching for over 100 kids.
