Brendan Gleeson lands Trump role in CBS miniseries based on Comey memoir

Actor Brendan Gleeson has landed the role of President Trump in an upcoming CBS miniseries based on former FBI Director James Comey’s 2018 memoir “A Higher Loyalty.”

The four-part miniseries will begin filming in November, Yahoo Entertainment reported. It will star actor Jeff Daniels as Comey, and its screenplay was written by “Captain Phillips” writer Billy Ray.

“It’s hard to imagine a bigger acting challenge than playing Donald Trump,” Ray said of the role, according to Yahoo Entertainment. “You have to have presence, and a singular kind of dynamism. You also have to have the courage and the will to play Trump’s psychology from the inside out. Oh, and you have to be spectacularly talented and watchable. Not many actors check all those boxes. Brendan does. I’m ecstatic about this.”

Gleeson is well-known for his role as Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody in the “Harry Potter” films.

Ray also said he thought Daniels was “perfect” for the part of Comey.

“We talked backstage after I saw him in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ on Broadway, and I knew I was looking at the only person who could play Jim Comey. Lucky for me, he said ‘yes,’ ” Ray told Variety.

The cast will also include actor Michael Kelly as former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe and actress Jennifer Ehle as Comey’s wife, Patrice, The Washington Post reported.

Ray researched the project for over a year to make the drama as accurate and fair as possible, traveling to Washington, D.C., and other cities to meet with Comey, his family, reporters, FBI agents and government officials from both political parties, Yahoo Entertainment reported.

The title of Comey’s 2018 memoir, released after he was fired from the Trump administration, is based on reports that Trump wanted Comey to pledge his loyalty to him.

Comey was appointed to be FBI director under President Obama in 2013.
