Australian-born actor Chris Hemsworth has pledged to donate $1 million dollars to help with the firefighting efforts in his native country as bush fires that have killed at least two dozen people and millions of animals continue to burn.
Hemsworth included a link in his Instagram bio sharing organizations that his followers could also support, including the Australian Red Cross, the Saint Vincent De Paul Society, the World Wildlife Fund and others.
“As you’re well aware, the bush fires in Australia have caused massive devastation,” Hemsworth, who is most notable for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said in a Monday video shared on Instagram.
“They continue to burn. There’s warmer weather on its way. We’re really still in the thick of it here. There’s plenty of challenging times ahead and still to come, so what we need is your support and your donations. I’m going to put forward $1 million, and I was hoping that all of you could contribute in any way, shape or form. Every dollar counts.”
“That money goes directly to the firefighters, the people on the front lines, the people who have suffered the communities that have taken a hit and who are in desperate need of our support. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who’s sent all their well wishes and donations already. It’s greatly appreciated here in Australia, but dig deep, lots of love and we’ll keep pushing forward,” he continued.

Hi everyone. Like you, I want to support the fight against the bushfires here in Australia. My family and I are contributing a million dollars. Hopefully you guys can chip in too. Every penny counts so whatever you can muster up is greatly appreciated. In my bio I’ve added links to support the fire fighters, organisations and charities who are working flat out to provide support and relief during this devastating and challenging time. Beyond appreciative to everyone around the world for their well wishes and donations. It really does make a difference, so dig deep! Love ya.
At least 25 people have died in the massive fires, NPR reported, as well as estimates of as many as 480 million animals.
On Monday, President Trump offered to assist the Australian government in fighting the fires. He spoke with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, a White House spokesman said, and “expressed deep concern for those affected and condolences for the firefighters and others who lost their lives.” The U.S. has approved the assistance of 100 firefighters to travel to Australia to assist in fighting the flames.
Hemsworth was lauded in the comments of his video by organizations and fellow celebrities.
The Australian Red Cross commented “We are blown away by your support. We cannot thank you enough @chrishemsworth.”
Hemsworth’s Marvel co-stars also commented applauding the actor’s donation. Robert Downey Jr. commented an emoji of hands praying alongside a heart. Jeremy Renner commented “My good man … much love to you, your family, and all of Australia.”
