Colbert on Ukraine controversy: ‘It might be the thing’ that gets Trump

Stephen Colbert suggested Tuesday on CBS’s “Late Show” that the recent controversy involving President Trump and Ukraine “might be the thing” that ends the presidency.

“For 2 ½ years, Donald Trump has had scandal after scandal: Russian collusion, obstruction of justice, saying Nazis are fine people, being an unnamed co-conspirator to campaign finance violations, lying about the Moscow Trump Tower, stealing money to pay for the border wall, faking the weather with a Sharpie,” Colbert said to open his show.

“Every time, people have asked, ‘Is this the thing? Surely this must be the thing,’ and every time, it wasn’t the thing. But here’s the thing: There’s a new thing, and it might be the thing because this afternoon, Nancy Pelosi did this thing.”

Colbert then played a clip of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announcing a formal impeachment inquiry. The clip elicited a standing ovation from the crowd.

Pelosi’s announcement Tuesday came after increasing pressure within the House Democratic caucus amid reports that Trump pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden earlier this year.

Trump has defended his conversations with the Ukrainian leader and said he has authorized the release of a transcript of his July call with Zelensky.

The president’s conversations also launched a complaint from a whistleblower within the administration that the executive branch has refused to turn over to lawmakers.

Pelosi’s move on Tuesday does not definitively mean the House will vote on articles of impeachment, and House committees have already been investigating Trump.
