Democratic lawmaker: It ‘defies logic’ for Trump to push Ukraine to investigate Biden

Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna (Calif.) said on Wednesday that it “defies logic” for President Trump to have pushed Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden in a call where others were listening in.

“For me, it’s very simple. It just comes down to why is the word Biden there so many times,” Khanna told The Hill’s Steve Clemons at the “Aspirations: Arab Youth and Modern Dream” panel at the Newseum.

“If you’re going after corruption, if you’re going after foreign policy objectives, fine,” Khanna, who is the co-chairman of Sen. Bernie Sanders‘s (I-Vt.) 2020 bid, said. “But it just defies logic that you would continually focus on Joe Biden, who happens to be the person beating you in the polls all summer.”

“You’d think just out of common sense if you have 25 people listening in on something, you’d be careful, but not this president,” he continued.

Khanna’s comments came at an event hosted by The Hill and underwritten by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington, D.C.

He spoke shortly before the first public hearings in the House impeachment inquiry kicked off on Capitol Hill.

House Democrats are investigating Trump’s push for Ukraine to investigate Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

The top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, William Taylor, revealed in his testimony that U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland told a member of his staff that Trump cared more about an investigation into Biden than he did about Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Trump continued to slam the impeachment hearing as a “witch hunt” and a “hoax” during an Oval Office meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“I’m too busy to watch it. It’s a witch hunt, it’s a hoax, I’m too busy to watch it. So, I’m sure I’ll get a report,” Trump said.

“There’s nothing — I have not been briefed. There’s nothing there. I see they’re using lawyers that are television lawyers, they took some guys off television. You know. I’m not surprised to see it, because [House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam] Schiff can’t do his own questions,” Trump continued.
