Feinstein calls for ‘word-for-word’ transcript of Trump call at heart of impeachment inquiry

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said after closed-door briefings with the acting director of national intelligence and the intelligence community inspector general that she wants a “word-for-word” transcript of President Trump‘s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Feinstein, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said the whistleblower complaint tied to Trump “suggests that an ‘official word-for-word transcript of the call’ was produced.”

“If so, it should be provided to Congress for review. Congress has a constitutional oversight duty. It’s important that we understand who took actions to hide details of the call with Zelensky and how high those actions reached,” Feinstein said.

The Senate Intelligence Committee received closed-door briefings on Thursday with acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire and Michael Atkinson, the intelligence community’s top watchdog, about the whistleblower complaint.

“I find the whistleblower complaint to be highly credible. It suggests that the president used his office to demand political favors from a foreign country and that White House personnel knew this was wrong and tried to cover it up by burying details of the call with Ukrainian President Zelensky,” Feinstein added in her statement.

A five-page partial transcript of the call with Zelensky was released earlier this week. In the memorandum, Trump asked Zelensky to work with his personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, and expressed hope that he “can look into” former Vice President Joe Biden’s role in the firing of a Ukrainian prosecutor.

“There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great,” Trump told Zelensky in the July 25 call.
