Gordon Sondland expected to appear for House deposition

U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland is expected to appear for his scheduled House deposition next week, a House Foreign Affairs Committee official confirmed to The Hill.

NBC previously reported that Sondland will appear, citing two congressional sources. The committee official confirmed in an email to The Hill that NBC’s reporting was accurate.

Sondland was among a group of five current and former State Department officials Democrats wanted to depose as part of their impeachment inquiry into President Trump over his dealings with Ukraine.

Sondland was mentioned in a recently released whistleblower complaint over a phone call in which President Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to look into Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden

The complaint alleged that Sondland and former special envoy for Ukraine Kurt Volker visited Kiev and met with Zelensky and other figures after Trump asked the Ukrainian leader to look into Biden.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the officials would not show up for the depositions, although since then, one of the officials was questioned by lawmakers.
