It’s not the first time Daniels, 64, will have played a prominent figure in the bureau: He starred as former FBI counterterrorism expert John O’Neill in Hulu’s “The Looming Tower.”
The CBS project’s screenwriter, Billy Ray, said in a statement that Daniels was the “perfect” choice for the part.
“We talked backstage after I saw him in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ on Broadway, and I knew I was looking at the only person who could play Jim Comey. Lucky for me, he said yes,” Ray told TVLine.
Daniels reportedly visited the nation’s capital and met with 58-year-old Comey and other Washington figures as part of his research for the new role.
Comey’s tell-all was sharply critical of President Trump and his administration, describing the commander in chief as “unethical” and his leadership style akin to a mob boss.
Trump fired Comey in 2017 as the FBI investigated Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Emmy Award-winning Daniels has slammed Trump before, saying during an appearance on CBS’s “The Late Show” last year that under Trump, the country has “lost respect, decency, civilized behavior, integrity, class, accountability, responsibility.”
An airdate or network for the four-hour limited series has yet to be announced.
