Kit Harington Checks Into Rehab For Stress And Alcohol Use

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has checked into a ‘wellness retreat’ to reportedly undergo treatment for stress and alcohol use.

According to Page Six, the 32-year-old checked in to the luxury Privé-Swiss centre weeks before the show’s finale on 19 May earlier this month.

The publication reported how Game of Thrones coming to an end ‘really hit him hard’ following eight years on the show portraying Jon Snow.

In a statement released to Sky News a representative for the British actor said: “Kit has decided to utilise this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues.”

Kit has had a leading role in Game of Thrones from the beginning to the end, which has taken its toll.

In an interview with Esquire, Harington explained how he felt when he filmed the final scenes of the HBO fan favourite, saying: “The final day of shooting, I felt fine… I felt fine… I felt fine… Then I went to do my last shots and started hyperventilating a bit.

“Then they called, ‘Wrap!’ And I just… broke down. It was this onslaught of relief and grief about not being able to do this again.”

Page Six reported that Harington has been undergoing psychological coaching, practising mindful meditation and cognitive behavioural therapy to combat stress and deal with negative emotions at the facility, which costs over $120,000 (£94,700) a month.

A friend told the publication: “The end of GoT really hit Kit hard. He realised ‘this is it – this is the end’, it was something they had all worked so hard on for so many years. He had a moment of, what next?

“He’s in the clinic predominantly for stress and exhaustion and also alcohol. His wife Rose is being extremely supportive. Everyone close to him really wanted him to get some rest. Right now, he just needs peace and quiet.”

The final episode of Game of Thrones aired on 19 May (US) 20 May (UK) and, despite bringing in a record 19.3 million viewers in the US alone, there has been some negative feedback about how the show came to a close.

This is something Kit was very vocal about when, in an interview with Esquire, he said: “How I feel about the show right now is quite defiant. I think no matter what anyone thinks about this season – and I don’t mean to sound mean about critics here – but whatever critic spends half an hour writing about this season and makes their [negative] judgement on it, in my head they can go fuck themselves.”

He continued: “I know how much work was put into this. I know how much people cared about this. I know how much pressure people put on themselves and I know how many sleepless nights working or otherwise people had on this show.

“Because they cared about it so much. Because they cared about the characters. Because they cared about the story. Because they cared about not letting people down.”
