More than $200K in taxpayer money spent at Trump hotel for Secret Service in his first year: report

Hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars were spent at the Trump International Hotel in Washington to cover Secret Service expenses during ’s first year in office, NBC News reports.

According to records obtained by the outlet, the Secret Service was charged $215,254 from September 2016 to February 2018 at the hotel, a place that has served as a hotspot for events for the president and his supporters since he assumed office.

Though the federal law enforcement agency declined to discuss the nature of the costs, NBC News was able to provide charges the hotel made to the Secret Service during the one-year period, including charges of over $30,000 that the hotel billed the agency over the course of just two days in 2017.

The Secret Service was reportedly charged a total of $33,638 for two days in June 2017 for a fundraiser kicking off the president’s reelection campaign. During that same month, the agency was also reportedly charged $14,900 for two more days of use at the hotel, as well as $11,475 for another two days in July 2017. 

Trump turned over control of his businesses to his two oldest sons in January 2017 following raised conflict-of-interest concerns from experts and lawmakers.

A number of Democratic lawmakers have pointed to Trump’s global businesses as evidence the president is violating the Constitution by continuing to profit from his businesses without congressional approval while he remains in office.

Democrats brought a lawsuit against Trump in 2017 alleging he is in violation of the Constitution’s Emoluments Clause that is still being considered in court.
