The song itself saw an increase of nearly 40 percent between Oct. 2., the day of the Trump tweet, and Oct. 2, according to USA Today, citing data from Nielsen. Digital downloads also increased about 569 percent during the same period, although this only represents 1,000 downloads, according to the newspaper.
The tweet by Trump edited the band’s video for the song to incorporate a photograph of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter with a Ukrainian gas company executive that has made the rounds in conservative media, intercut with a clip of the elder Biden saying “I’ve never spoken to my son about his business dealings.”
Trump’s baseless allegations that Biden improperly had a Ukrainian prosecutor removed to prevent him from investigating a company whose board his son sat on gave rise to a July call between him and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky in which Trump pressures Zelensky to investigate the Bidens.
The band reported the tweet for a copyright violation, leading to the video’s removal the next day.
