Paolo Nutini Buys Lewis Capaldi’s Chewbacca Mask And Donates £10,000 To Charity

Paolo Nutini has bought the Chewbacca mask worn by Lewis Capaldi at this year’s TRNSMT Festival.

The mask had previously been bought by another bidder for £7,000 ($8,577), but when they pulled out at the last minute, the Scottish singer came to the rescue.

However, the 32-year-old upped the bid for the piece of Star Wars memorabilia, donating an incredible £10,000 ($12,253) to the Tiny Changes Charity, which supports people with issues surrounding mental health.

The group was set up in memory of Frightened Rabbit’s frontman Scott Hutchison, who took his own life in May last year.

Paolo now plans to raise even more money by raffling off the mask.

Speaking about the donation, Paolo said: “I really wanted to find a way to help out the Tiny Changes Charity.

“Not only am I a big fan of Frightened Rabbit but I was lucky enough to share the stage with them on various occasions – most memorably for me on Hogmanay in Edinburgh 2017.

“Scott was such a great and honest songwriter who was not afraid to convey what he was going through in such a beautiful and honest way. People could hear and read their troubles in his lyrics and be reminded that they were not alone in how they were feeling. That really is the power of music.”

After hearing his compatriot had jumped in with a massive bid and taken the mask, Capaldi praised him, calling the ‘Iron Sky’ singer a ‘f***ing hero’.

Capaldi wowed crowds at this year’s TRNSMT Festival, in Glasgow, when he walked out wearing the Chewie mask.

For those of you who don’t know – where have you been? – the stunt was a reaction to former Oasis member Noel Gallagher, who slagged off the Scottish singer, saying: “F***ing Chewbacca should enjoy his 15 minutes.”

But never one to let someone else have the last laugh, Capaldi donned the Chewbacca mask in front of his adoring fans and even sang ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, but changed the lyrics to ‘Don’t Chewbac In Anger’.

In the wake of the exchange, he also changed his Twitter handle ‘Lewis Capaldi’ to ‘Chewis Capaldi’ – whipping up an impressive new profile pic to match his new name.

The original eBay advert for the mask said: “For sale….THE actual latex Chewbacca mask worn by Lewis Capaldi at TRNSMT festival on 14/07/19.

“I work for DF concerts and events and donated my mask to Lewis Capaldi for his performance. He signed it as well shortly after coming off stage. So I thought the best thing to do with it would be sell it on eBay with the profits going to the charity Tiny Changes, which was set up in memory of Scott Hutchison (Frightened Rabbit).”
