Career

Priyanka was working as a veterinarian at a veterinary hospital in Kolluru Village near Shadnagar in Hyderabad.

Death/Murder

On 27 November 2019, she was returning to her home after completing her duties in a hospital, where she had been working for the past one year. She was brutally raped and murdered by some unknown men. On 28 November 2019, police found her half-burnt dead body 30 km away from Shadnagar, below an underpass. While she was returning home on 27 November, her two-wheeler’s tire was punctured, and some unknown men had approached her to help in repairing it.

On 29 November 2019, the local police successfully identified the accused with the help of CCTV footage and took them under custody. The prime suspect, Areef had approached her to help in repairing the puncture, another suspect, Jollu Shiva had taken her scooter to the repair shop. Reportedly, two other men were involved in this crime. They brutally raped Priyanka, wrapped her dead body in a blanket and took her to Shadnagar, where they burnt her body. Cyberabad police commissioner VC Sajjanar said,

Our officer took them into a patrol vehicle and scanned the CCTV footage. The victim was also seen in the CCTV footage of the plaza. At around 3 pm, the family was brought back to book an official complaint. Till 5 am, we searched all puncture shops. The body was found at around 7 am.”

 

Facts/Trivia

  • Priyanka’s sister, Bhavya said that she got a call on 27 November at 9.15 pm from Priyanka, and she said that someone had offered help to Priyanka to get the tire repaired. Bhavya told that Priyanka said to her on phone,

You please keep talking until my scooter comes back. They (the strangers) are all waiting outside. You please keep talking to me, I am scared.”

  • Naini Narshimha Reddy’s (the Minister of Home Affairs of Hyderabad) statement on the whole incident was,

Priyanka could have been saved if she called the police instead of her sister, said the state Home Minister Mahmood Ali.”

  • However, the minister later clarified his remarks saying she was like her daughter. He said,

Deeply saddened by the mishap. Stern action will be delivered to the culprit. “How anyone could subject another human being to such terrible, unprovoked violence is beyond imagination. My thoughts & prayers are with the victim’s family at this time of immense grief.”

  • On 29 November 2019, the local police identified all the suspects. The prime suspect was Mohammed Areef (26), a truck driver. The other three, all aged 20, were cleaners J Shiva, J Naveen, and C Chennakeshavulu a.k.a. Chenna, a driver. All were residents of Makthal in Narayanpet district.

  • Bollywood, Tollywood, and TV actors came in the support of Priyanka Reddy. Actress, Yami Gautam tweeted,

Anger,sorrow ,shock ..how could these inhuman,unimaginable crimes against women still happen despite such strong uproar & awareness ! Do these demons have no fear of punishment or law,,Where are we going wrong & lagging behind as a system & as a society,,,#JusticeForPriyankaReddy”
