Rather rips Trump for ‘deeply strange behavior’ at G-20: He ‘is praising almost any autocrat he can find’

Veteran journalist Dan Rather criticized for his “deeply strange behavior” towards Russian President at the G-20 summit.

“This is deeply strange, at least borderline bizarre, to see what happened today in that meeting with Putin,” he said Friday of Trump’s conduct with Putin at the recent G-20 summit, further adding: “But that was only the beginning.”

“He praises the leader of Saudi Arabia,” Rather continued while speaking to CNN’s Anderson Cooper, saying that “to put this in context, we have to understand, and whether you’re Republican, Democrat or whatever, that under President Trump, American foreign policy has become incoherent and immaturish.”

“For example, tweeting to the president of North Korea, ‘Meet me at the DMZ, just to see you and say hello,’” Rather continues, referring to a tweet Trump shared on Friday. “Those kinds of things.”

Cooper cut in saying he thought that was “a joke” at first.

“Well, it turns out it wasn’t a joke. We knew it came directly from the president,” Rather responded, before saying, “the point is history is watching through all this.”

“And let’s just start but we won’t end with whatever’s going on with President Trump and President Putin. As I say, deeply strange and dangerous. History’s watching, but they’re also watching all of this business with America foreign policies being incoherent all over the lot.”

“The president himself doesn’t seem all that interested in learning about foreign policy, which can be complicated,” Rather continued, telling Cooper that it’s “hard to say in President Trump’s case whether it’s more ineptitude, ignorance or mendacity. But whatever it is, it’s dangerous for the country.

“And there is this, at the same time the president is almost praising ay autocrat he can find,” Rather said, adding that he believes the president is behaving with Putin in a way that “many Americans, and not all of them Democrats, find humiliating and embarrassing. But at the same time, he’s very critical of our friends and allies.”

Trump recently caught heat online Friday after he took a jab at the media in a conversation with Putin, during which he said: “Get rid of them. Fake news is a great term, isn’t it? You don’t have this problem in Russia, but we do.”

Trump was also met with criticism after capturing headlines recently for posing in photo next to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad, who has been accused of directing the killing of Washington Post columnist and critic Jamal Khashoggi.
