Setting For ‘Dragon Age 4’ Seemingly Confirmed By Short Story Collection

A forthcoming short-story collection penned by a number of Dragon Age writers might have given the setting for Dragon Age 4 away.

First teased at the Game Awards in late 2018 (check out the trailer below), we don’t officially know a lot about what’s to come in BioWare’s fourth mainline Dragon Age game. But the title of the story collection, Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights, has stirred speculation that it’s Tevinter Imperium that’s set to be a star of the forthcoming title.

And fans of the fantasy RPG series have long-fancied the idea of a new game set in Tevinter Imperium – the oldest extant human nation on the continent of Thedas, and a place ruled by powerful mages. At the end of Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s Trespasser DLC, released in the autumn of 2015, we see the player’s character, the Inquisitor, stick a knife into a map of Tevinter Imperium. Foreshadowing! Love it.

Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights – if tied to the fourth game – sure suggests that it’s this location that the series is travelling to. And in past games, the action has always been tied to a particular part of the franchise’s fantasy world – Inquisition, for example, was set in the Orlesian Empire. Dragon Age’s lead writer, Patrick Weekes, is the editor of Tevinter Nights, and he posted on Twitter to clarify his position on the project.

According to its listing on Amazon, Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights will release on 10 March 2020, published by Tor Books. If it follows the precedent of previous books based on the series, it’ll introduce some characters that’ll have roles to play in Dragon Age 4. Weekes’ book called The Masked Empire set up certain story elements of Inquisition, so we’re expecting Tevinter Nights to do likewise.

BioWare is currently supporting Anthem – and will do so for the foreseeable – so we’re not about to guess when Dragon Age 4 could come out. But if the book’s published in March next year, it could be that we get a proper trailer around the same time. Or, that we get nothing at all! No amount of crystal ball gazing is going to clear this up, until BioWare are ready to reveal more.
