South Korean students arrested protesting Trump’s campaign on U.S. military support

A group of South Korean students were arrested Saturday when they broke into American Ambassador Harry Harris‘s Seoul residence.

According to Bloomberg, they were part of a liberal university student group and were protesting President Trump‘s push to get South Korea to pay more for U.S. military support.

The U.S. and South Korea are scheduled to meet in Honolulu this coming week to discuss shared defense costs.

Earlier this year, the pair of countries reached a one-year cost-sharing deal that keeps roughly 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea, but that deal expires at year’s end.

U.S.-South Korea relations have been tense since Seoul terminated a pact with Japan — another key U.S. ally in the region — for reportedly restricting the exports of certain materials needed for the construction of semiconductors to the east Asian country.
