The Fast And The Furious Writer Says A Space Movie Could Happen

As the first Fast and the Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw is set to hit cinemas, writer Chris Morgan has said ‘nothing is out of the question’ about future plots, including sending the gang into space.

In an interview with Polygon, Morgan, who has written every Fast and the Furious film since Tokyo Drift – the third movie – has said that a space-based flick could potentially happen, and that the only thing that is completely off the cards is anything that breaks physics.

Seems like a good rule.

When asked by Polygon if he would ever consider a James Bond Moonraker type of set-up, Morgan said: “Nothing’s out of the question. Absolutely nothing. It just has to be cool and it has to be good. You know, that’s the thing.”

Well space movies can be both ‘cool’ and ‘good’, so that’s a start.

But the writer did take time to point out that it still has to be within the laws of physics, explaining: “I have one internal regulator on all this stuff. I’m a big action guy and a big action fan and I love physics too, by the way. I think the limiter for me is that we will bend to physics and never outright break it-break it. So how do you determine that?

“Well, for me, while you’re watching the movie and while you’re watching the action sequence, does something happen that’s so physically impossible or absurd that it breaks faith with the audience? That you suddenly can no longer enjoy the movie and you don’t care about the characters because of that breakage”

Morgan isn’t the first person from the franchise to refuse to rule out inter-galactic travel.

The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray told ScreenRant last year: “Outer space? Listen, I wouldn’t rule anything out with this franchise. When I read ‘submarine’ [in The Fate of the Furious], I’m like, ‘OK, anything’s possible’.

“You never know. I haven’t read ‘Dom on Mars’ yet, but again, you just never know.”

As well as Hobbs and Shaw, a ninth film is currently in production, but this one appears to be very much set on planet Earth.

The ninth movie will see Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez return and will also star Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster and Helen Mirren.

It’s tipped to be released on 22 May 2020, while Hobbs and Shaw is out in UK cinemas next week.
