White House rips media’s ‘annual holiday tradition’ of criticizing Melania Trump

The White House is slamming what it’s calling the media’s “annual holiday tradition” of criticizing first lady Melania Trump.

“It has become an annual holiday tradition for the media to attack all that the first lady does,” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said Tuesday.

“If this was a Democratic administration, I suspect Mrs. Trump and her work would be featured positively in every mainstream news outlet,” said Grisham.

The spokeswoman for the first lady and President Trump didn’t specify when asked by ITK if she was referring to any particular outlet’s reporting. But Grisham is believed to be frustrated with the past two years of White House holiday decoration coverage. Red cranberry-covered trees that were a part of last year’s Christmas ornamentation at the White House were criticized by some as “spooky,” with Slate referring to them as “red Christmas trees of death.”

Melania Trump said in an interview last year when asked about the Christmastime criticism, “We are in the 21st century and everybody has a different taste.”

“I think they look fantastic,” she said.

Grisham’s comments were originally reported by Fox News’ Brian Flood, who posted a link to an article by Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan titled “Melania Trump’s Christmas decorations are lovely, but that coat looks ridiculous.”

The piece tweaked Trump’s sartorial choice in a video released earlier this week by the White House unveiling the annual holiday decorations at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Givhan, a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, called the white coat Trump wore draped over her shoulders while revealing the “Spirit of America” theme a “distraction,” writing, “In a video that is intended to celebrate the warmth and welcoming spirit of the holiday season, that simple flourish exudes cold, dismissive aloofness.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also took aim at the press for its coverage of the White House’s big Christmas decor reveal, dubbing it “deranged criticism.”
